Why Your Spray Tan Fades

If you’ve ever walked out of a spray tan feeling absolutely golden — only to wake up the next morning looking like it barely happened — you’re not alone. And here’s the thing: most of the time, it’s not the tan. It’s what you’re doing (or using) before and after.

As a mobile spray tan artist, I see this every single day. People invest in a gorgeous, even glow and then unknowingly sabotage it with the products already sitting in their bathroom. So let’s break it down — here are the biggest culprits and exactly why they’re wrecking your tan.

The Products Destroying Your Tan

🚫 Oil-Based Moisturizers

This is the number one tan killer. Oil-based lotions and body oils break down the DHA in your spray tan faster than almost anything else. If you love moisturizing (and you should), switch to a water-based or lightweight lotion after your tan is set.

🚫 Antibacterial Soaps

Antibacterial soaps are harsh and strip your skin — and your tan — unevenly. They dry out your skin in a way that makes the tan fade in patches. Stick to a gentle, sulfate-free body wash instead.

🚫 Exfoliants & Scrubs (Post-Tan)

This one might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people forget. Any scrub or exfoliant after your tan is going to physically rub the color right off. Save the exfoliating for 24 hours before your next tan — not after.

🚫 Hand Sanitizer

The alcohol in hand sanitizer is brutal on a fresh tan, especially on your hands. If you need to sanitize, try to use gloves or wipe it off quickly. Your hands will thank you.

🚫 Perfume & Cologne on Skin

Spritzing perfume directly onto your skin? That alcohol is fading your tan in that exact spot. Apply your fragrance to your clothes or pulse points that are covered instead.

🚫 Waterproof Sunscreen

Here’s one that surprises a lot of people. Waterproof sunscreens contain heavy chemicals that break down your tan way faster than regular sunscreen. If you’re heading to the pool or beach, opt for a mineral-based or non-waterproof formula.

🚫 Bar Soap

Bar soaps are drying and harsh on tanned skin. They strip your natural oils and cause your tan to fade unevenly. A gentle body wash is always the better choice.

🚫 Chlorine & Hot Tubs

Chlorine is an instant fade — no way around it. If you’re planning a pool day or spa night, just know your tan is going to take a hit. Time it strategically if you can.

🚫 Detergent Residue on Clothes

This one flies under the radar. Wearing tight, freshly washed clothes right after your tan can actually pull the color off your skin. Give your clothes an extra rinse or let your tan fully develop before getting dressed.

So What Should You Use Instead?

After your tan is fully developed, stick with water-based moisturizers, gentle sulfate-free body washes, and mineral sunscreens. These will keep your skin hydrated and your glow lasting way longer than you’d expect. Trust me — the right products make all the difference.

The Bottom Line

A good spray tan should last 7-10 days with the right care. If yours is fading in 2–3, take a look at what’s in your bathroom cabinet. Chances are, one (or a few) of these products are the culprit.

And if you want a tan that’s built to last from the start? That’s exactly what I do. Every application is customized to your skin tone, and I’ll send you home with aftercare tips so your glow stays gorgeous as long as possible.
