When Should I Book My Spray Tan?
“When should I book my spray tan?” is the question I get asked more than anything else — and for good reason.
Timing is everything when it comes to a flawless spray tan. Book too early and your color may fade before the big moment. Book too close and you risk dark transfer or underdeveloped color showing up in your photos. After thousands of tans and five-star reviews, I’ve developed a tried-and-true timeline for every occasion — so you can walk in with confidence knowing your glow will be absolutely perfect when it matters most.
The Golden Rule
24–48 Hours Before Is the Sweet Spot
For most events, booking your spray tan 24–48 hours before the event gives your tan enough time to fully develop, darken, and settle into your skin — resulting in the most natural, even, and long-lasting color. This is the window where your glow is at its absolute peak.
The Full Timeline Breakdown
Your wedding day deserves the most flawless, photographable tan of your life — and that means planning ahead. Book your wedding day tan exactly 2 days (48 hours) before your ceremony. This gives your color time to fully develop and any initial bronzer to rinse away, leaving behind a gorgeous, natural glow that photographs beautifully.
Even better? Book the Bridal Glow Experience — which includes a trial tan before your big day so there are zero surprises. You’ll walk down the aisle knowing exactly how your skin will look, feel, and photograph.
Heading to the beach, a resort, or somewhere sunny? Book your spray tan 1–2 days before you leave. You’ll arrive at your destination already glowing — no waiting around for a natural tan to develop, no awkward “first day pale” photos.
Planning to be in the water or sun a lot? Ask about our sweat-resistant add-on (+$15) for extra longevity. Saltwater, chlorine, and excessive sun will naturally fade your tan faster, so we’ll factor that into your shade selection to keep you glowing all week.
Prom, homecoming, formal dances — these are big moments that deserve a glow to match. Book your tan 1–2 days before the event for fully developed color that looks natural in photos and complements your dress beautifully.
The night before is also a great option if you’re wearing a lighter-colored dress — you’ll have time to rinse and let the color settle without any risk of transfer onto your gown.
Whether it’s a professional photoshoot, headshots, boudoir, or a styled session, 24–48 hours before is ideal. Your color will be fully developed, even, and natural-looking — not orange, not streaky, not too dark. Just a gorgeous, healthy glow that the camera loves.
Tell your photographer you have a fresh spray tan so they can adjust lighting accordingly — a good photographer will thank you for it.
Girls’ trip, birthday dinner, bachelorette weekend, or a special night out? The day before is perfect. Your tan will be fully developed by morning, you’ll have time to shower and get ready, and you’ll glow all night long.
This is also a great time to ask about a membership — if you’re going out regularly and want to stay consistently glowing, the Sunless Society VIP Membership saves you serious money while keeping your tan always fresh.
Fitness competitions, bikini competitions, and athletic events call for a deeper, more dramatic tan that reads beautifully under stage lighting. I recommend starting 2–3 days out with an initial layer, then potentially building with a second application 24 hours before competition depending on the look you need.
Ask about our sweat-resistant add-on — it’s a must for any event where you’ll be active, perspiring, or under hot lights. It dramatically extends wear and prevents transfer.
Want to look effortlessly glowing year-round without planning around events? Consistent spray tanning is the answer. Most clients on a regular schedule tan every 1–2 weeks, refreshing before the old tan has fully faded for the most seamless, natural-looking results.
The Sunless Society VIP Membership was built exactly for this — regular glow maintenance at a fraction of the cost, with perks like priority booking, free upgrades, and a free birthday tan.

Before You Come In
Use a gentle, oil-free exfoliant the day before your appointment. Focus on knees, elbows, ankles, and wrists — anywhere skin tends to be drier or thicker.
Come in with clean, product-free skin. No lotion, deodorant, perfume, or makeup on the body. These can create a barrier that prevents even absorption.
Any waxing or shaving should be done at least 24 hours before your tan — ideally 48 hours. This gives pores time to close and prevents uneven color at hair follicles.
Bring loose, dark clothing to wear home and for the next several hours. Tight clothing and waistbands can leave marks on a developing tan.
After Your Tan
Rinse Times — It Depends on Your Solution
Every tan is a little different depending on the solution your artist uses. For overnight solutions, wait 8–12 hours before your first rinse — the longer you wait, the deeper and darker your result. For rapid solutions, your artist will give you a specific rinse window anywhere from 2–6 hours — follow that timing closely, as rinsing too early or too late can affect your final color. When in doubt, always go with what your artist recommends! Use warm (not hot) water and skip soap on the first rinse. Pat dry, never rub. Apply a tan-extending moisturizer daily to keep your glow lasting up to 7–10 days.
